Winged Beauty

Having made a name for herself with her signature butterfly prints and ultra-feminine silhouettes, designer Irina Shabayeva whips up a modern classic exclusively for Designow

“I had no idea she was going to wear it on the red carpet,” says designer Irina Shabeyeva of the high-low hem butterfly wing print gown that Selena Gomez donned to take home a 2011 People’s Choice Award. In the subsequent five years, the Brooklyn-born talent and Project Runway alum has added Carrie Underwood and Kendall Jenner to her growing roster of bold-faced clients and it’s Shabayeva’s clean, classic silhouettes with intricate fabric treatments that keep them coming back.

Originally enrolling at Parsons to study painting, Shabayeva made the switch to fashion design after being inspired by a classmate. “There was a girl in one of my painting classes, and after seeing her portfolio I realized that fashion could be a great bridge between being artistic and creating an actual product,” says Shabayeva, whose fine arts background has been put to good use designing custom prints the old-fashioned way, paintbrush in hand, directly onto the fabric. Another
Shabayeva signature: feather and lace embellishments done by some of the most skilled hands in New York’s Garment District, which elevate her work from merely custom to demi-couture.

For her Designow debut, Shabeyeva chose a new iteration of a wardrobe staple: the littleblack dress. Working in a lightweight neoprene (which does double duty as shapewear, ladies!), the universally flattering fit-and-flare silhouette (one of Shabayeva’s favorites) can hold its own in a crowd of cocktail numbers, quite literally, as Shabayeva inserted boning typically used for corsetry into the dress’s hem. “Being able to create this dress at such a great pricepoint so that my work can be widely available to many is really exciting,” she says.
